With a law degree from Stetson College of Law, Judge Michael Kalil currently holds the position of Circuit Court Judge at the Fourth Judicial Circuit in Jacksonville. A civil attorney deals with non-criminal aspects of legal disputes. In Florida, board certification is the highest attainable standard for legal proficiency in variouis categories of practice. The certification signifies that an attorney has attained a distinguished level of experience and competency in the areas of law approved by the Florida Supreme Court and the Florida Bar.

The Florida Bar minimum board certification standards in civil trial law include, among others: a minimum five years of full-time practice, substantial involvement in civil trial law practice in the three years preceding the application including trial experience, and peer review and approval with a written examination. There are other categories of board certification

The certification for a civil trial lawyer is required to be renewed every five years unless there is a specific waiver for a particular requirement.
